Current Funding

Major funding for GSECARS facility operations is provided by NSF Earth Sciences (EAR) through SEES: Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science. Additional funding for specific scientific programs is provided by DOE Geosciences, NASA, and NSF EAR.

Funding History

The design, construction, and first 20+ years of GeoSoilEnviroCARS operations were funded by grants to the University of Chicago from NSF EAR (1994-2023) and DOE Geosciences (1994-2018).  A major upgrade of the sector to canted undulator operations (2009-2011) was supported by three agencies: NASA-SRLIDAP (now LARS), NSF-EAR-IF (ARRA) and DOE-Single Investigator Small Group (SISGR). Accelerator components for that upgrade were provided by the Advanced Photon Source using DOE-ARRA funding. In collaboration with the University of Hawaii and GSECARS, COMPRES funded the Partnership for eXtreme Xtallography (PX^2) from 2014-2023 to develop and operate single crystal diffraction capabilities in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell at 13-BM-C. GSECARS beamline enhancements coinciding with the APS Upgrade (2023-2024) were funded by DOE and NSF EAR.
