13 BM-D Multi-Anvil Press (LVP)

The Large Volume Press (LVP) facilities hosts the following devices: (1) a 1000 ton multi-function press at 13-ID-D, (2) a 250 ton multi-function press at 13-BM-D, and (3) a 230 ton Paris-Edinburgh press at 16-BM-B of HPCAT.

Beamline Specifications

13-ID-D hosts the 1000 ton LVP

Two high pressure modules are used in this LVP interchangeably: (1) T-25 — a split-cylinder type Kawai apparatus that uses 25.4 mm second-stage WC anvils, with compression along the [111] axis of the Kawai cell.  Maximum attainable pressure and temperature are 28 GPa and 3000 K, respectively.  Standard cell assemblies: 8/3, 10/5, 14/8.  (2) DDIA-30 — a large deformation DIA which can be operated in two modes.  In deformation mode, one may use 6-6MA cells with desired anvil truncation to conduct deformation experiments, with strain and stresses controlled by the differential rams.  In double-stage hydrostatic mode, one can use second-stage anvils made of sintered diamond anvils (14 mm cubes) for ultra-high pressure experiments.  Maximum pressure and temperature are currently 40 GPa and 2500 K, respectively.  Acoustic interferometry is available for both modes.  Acoustic emission experiments are possible, with special arrangements.

13-BM-D hosts the 250 ton LVP

Several devices are available based on the “Swiss-Army Knife” approach.  (1) a DIA apparatus, ideal for viscosity and density measurements based on x-ray absorption.   (2) a D-DIA for controlled deformation experiments.  (3) a high-pressure tomography apparatus for 3D sample microstructural imaging.  (4) a T-10, a smaller version of T-25.  Both white and monochromatic radiation can be used.  Acoustic interferometry is available for most of the devices.  Acoustic emission experiments require special arrangements.

16-BM-B hosts the 230 ton Paris-Edinburgh apparatus

16-BM-B hosts the 230 ton Paris-Edinburgh apparatusin collaboration with HPCAT.  This device is ideal for structural studies on amorphous materials using multi-angle energy-dispersive diffraction.  Acoustic interferometry can be combined with diffraction.  Beam time application for this technique is through the HPCAT.
