Exploring Silicon’s Effect on Earth’s Core
High temperature (“hot”) and quenched to room temperature (“cold”) integrated XRD patterns and related 2D images combined from series of burst heatings at 13ID-D (49-56 GPa) showing temperature induced phase transition from hcp to fcc crystal structures of the Fe0.8Ni0.1Si0.1. With in-situ XRD measurements in the double-sided laser heated DAC we precisely constrain the hcp–fcc phase boundary and evaluate the effect of silicon on melting temperatures.
