Junior Mechanical Technician

GSECARS is one of three sectors managed by the University of Chicago Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. GSECARS is a national user facility where synchrotron radiation research in earth, planetary, and environmental science is conducted. Position will be based at the APS, working with the staff responsible for enabling research by the scientists who use GSECARS facilities.

Job Summary: GeoSoilEnviro Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (GSECARS ), a University of Chicago research group located at sector 13 of The Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, seeks a junior technical support staff-member to assist in the operation, maintenance and development of our research facility. Under supervision, this person will be responsible for the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of systems and components that support the research mission of GSECARS.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for maintenance, upgrade and operation of the facility (70%)
  • Participate in fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of experimental hardware.  
  • Assist with experiment setups, equipment repairs and straightforward fabrication requests when called upon.
  • Diagnose and repair equipment.
  • Fabricate - using CNC and related methods - high-precision parts to be used in equipment for experiments that generate extreme high-pressure conditions (30%).

  • Good organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a group.
  • Able and willing to assist in installation and troubleshooting of simple to complex mechanical systems.
  • Basic electrical/mechanical knowledge required.
  • Familiarity with computers required.
  • Familiarity with basic machine shop equipment required (drill press, milling machine, lathe preferred).
  • Ability to work in an environment with strict safety regulations.
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements for access to Argonne National Laboratory.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Associate's degree in mechanical, electrical or manufacturing technology or equivalent.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and instructions.
  • Proficient with basic hand and power tools.
  • Familiarity with machine shop equipment (drill press, milling machine, lathe preferred).

Working Conditions and Physical Demands (if applicable):

  • Position is based at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to ascend ladders and work in narrow spaces         .
  • Minimal outdoor work required.
